Qurbani 2025/1446 in Aden, Yemen

What is Qurbani?

As part of the season of Hajj/Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world take part in the sacrifice known as uḍḥiya or qurbani.

Whilst pilgrims on the Hajj perform rites in imitation of the Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) and his family, Muslims who are not on the pilgrimage take part in the specific rite of the sacrifice.

In a test of his devotion to God, Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a dream in which he sacrificed his only son. Interpreting this as a command from God, the Prophet Ibrahim told his son who, in an expression of self-sacrifice, complied and advised his father to do as he was told.

When the boy was old enough to work with his father, Ibrahim said, ‘My son, I have seen myself sacrificing you in a dream. What do you think?’ He said, ‘Father do as you are commanded and, God willing, you will find me steadfast.’ [Quran 37:102]

As Ibrahim began to pass his knife through his son’s throat, God informed Him that the command to sacrifice his son had been a test that he and his son had passed and that Ibrahim should slaughter a ram in his stead.

Who must carry out the Qurbani?

According to the Hanafi school the Qurbani is compulsory and is incumbent upon every sane adult who has the means to carry out the sacrifice. The majority of scholars are of the opinion that the Qurbani is a strongly emphasised sunna, and should not be neglected by anyone who is able to do so.

What counts as a Qurbani?

The animals that can be slaughtered to carry out the Qurbani are sheep, goats, cows and camels. Other animals do not meet the conditions of the Qurbani. A sheep and a goat count as one person’s Qurbani while a cow and camel can be slaughtered on behalf of seven people.

When should the Qurbani be carried out?

The time for Qurbani starts as soon as one has prayed the Eid Prayer on the morning of Eid (10th Dhul Hijjah) and carries on until sunset of the 13th of Dhul Hijjah. Any animal slaughtered before the Eid prayer does not count as Qurbani.

If I pay Qurbani on behalf of someone else who’s name do they call out?

It is not necessary to pronounce the name of the person, even if you are making a Qurbani on behalf of someone else. Simply making the intention that you are giving this Qurbani on behalf of a certain person is sufficient.
