The Prophet (saw) said, ‘Rajab is the month of Allah, Sha‘ban is my month and Ramadan is the month of my Ummah’. [Suyuti]
Sha’ban is a month that often goes unnoticed, overshadowed by the grandeur of Rajab and the anticipation of Ramadan. Yet, it is a month of immense significance, a time of preparation, reflection, and increased devotion.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself highlighted the importance of Sha’ban when he was asked about his frequent fasting in this month. He said:
"That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which deeds are taken up to the Lord of the Worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting." (Sunan an-Nasa’i 2357)
This Hadith reminds us that Sha’ban is a month of spiritual renewal—a chance to increase our acts of worship before Ramadan arrives. It is a time to cleanse our hearts, mend our relationships, and strengthen our connection with Allah through fasting, prayer, and charity.
Just as the Prophet ﷺ used Sha’ban to prepare for Ramadan, we too should use this month wisely. Let us increase in dhikr, seek forgiveness, and extend our hands to those in need. The deeds we establish now will help us enter Ramadan with a heart that is ready to receive its blessings.
Let’s not overlook Sha’ban. Let’s embrace it as an opportunity to draw closer to Allah and make the most of this special time.
The Prophet ﷺ would fast frequently in Sha’ban, more than any other month outside of Ramadan. Aisha (RA) said:
"I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast for an entire month except in Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Sha’ban." (Bukhari & Muslim)
Fasting in Sha’ban helps us prepare physically and spiritually for Ramadan while increasing our rewards.
Sha’ban is an opportunity to build good habits before Ramadan. Increase in prayer, Qur’an recitation, and dhikr. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Verily, Allah looks down in the middle night of Sha’ban and forgives all His creation except those who associate partners with Him or those who have enmity between them." (Ibn Majah)This hadith reminds us to purify our hearts, seek forgiveness, and mend broken relationships.
One of the greatest ways to earn Allah’s pleasure is through charity. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The best charity is that given in Ramadan." (Tirmidhi)Since Sha’ban is the gateway to Ramadan, what better way to prepare than by increasing in charity now? By giving in Sha’ban, we not only help those in need but also train ourselves to be more generous when Ramadan arrives. At Rafah International, we are working tirelessly to provide food, water, and medical aid to the most vulnerable, especially in Yemen. Sha’ban is the perfect time to sincerely ask Allah for a spiritually fulfilling Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ would say:
